Glossary of Selected Terms in the Petrochemical Industry

In this offering memorandum, references to the following terms can be understood as follows:

Term Meaning Main uses In the context of our business
ABS Copolymer of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. Used in construction materials, automotive parts, home appliances, and computer equipment. We produce and sell acrylonitrile and styrene, two main raw materials for ABS production.
Acetone Organic compound produced directly or indirectly from propylene, mainly in the cumene-phenol process. Also referred to as propanone. Used as a solvent or as a chemical intermediate (to synthesize MMA or EMA, and bisphenol A). We use acetone to produce ACH, which is used to synthesize MMA or EMA.
Acetonitrile Organic compound mainly produced as a by-product of acrylonitrile manufacture. Used as a solvent in the purification of butadiene in refineries, and in liquid chromatography. Acetonitrile is as a by-product of our acrylonitrile production process.
ACH Acetone cyanohydrin. Organic compound used in the production of MMA or EMA. Used as a chemical intermediate (to synthesize MMA or EMA). We produce ACH, which is used in the production of MMA or EMA.
Acrylic sheets Laminated and extruded sheets of acrylic materials. Used in construction, furniture, automotive industry, visual communication, lighting. We produce cell cast acrylic sheets in Mexico, using a polymerization process in which MMA is pumped into a glass mold and then submerged in warm water or put in stoves. We also have idled capacity to produce cast acrylic sheets and extruded acrylic sheets in Brazil.
Acrylics Generic classification for several chemical products with the same “acrylic” group in their molecules. Used for several applications within different industries. We use this term to refer to one of the main categories of products we sell, which includes products such as acrylonitrile, methacrylates (MMA and EMA), cell cast acrylic sheets, sodium cyanide, ammonium sulfate, among others.
Acrylonitrile Organic liquid compound mainly produced by catalytic ammoxidation of propylene. Used to produce acrylic fibers, ABS and SAN resins, Acrylamide, adiponitrile,  nitrile rubbers, carbon fibers, etc. We produce and sell acrylonitrile.
Ammonia Organic compound of nitrogen and hydrogen. Formula: NH3. Used as a fertilizer, precursor to nitrogenous compounds, cleaner, fermentation, etc. We use ammonia as raw material to produce acrylonitrile, HCN and acetonitrile (in the acrylonitrile production process), and also used in our HCN on-purpose production plant.
Ammonium sulfate Inorganic compound. Mainly used as a fertilizer, it is also used as food additive and for leather tanning. We produce ammonium sulfate as a by-product of our acrylonitrile, methacrylates and HCN production processes.
EMA Ethyl methacrylate, is an organic compound. Used in coatings, adhesives and acrylic nails. We produce EMA through the acetone cyanohydrin (ACH) process, using ethanol as a raw material.
Ethanol Ethyl alcohol. Used as fuel for vehicles, as a disinfectant and as a chemical intermediate (to produce ethylene, EMA, etc). We use ethanol as a raw material to produce ethyl methacrylate (EMA).
Ethylbenzene Organic compound. Used as a chemical intermediate(to produce styrene). We produce ethylbenzene by the alkylation of benzene with ethylene.
HCN Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is a chemical compound, poisonous gas. Used as the precursor to produce cyanides, cyanohydrins, methionine and other chemical products. We use HCN as the precursor to produce sodium cyanide and ACH.
Latex Stable dispersion (emulsion) of polymer micro particles in an aqueous medium. Used in paper and textile coatings, carpet backing, decorative functional nonwovens to specialty paper and packaging. We produce latex by polymerization of styrene, butadiene and other chemicals that have been emulsified by surfactants.
Methacrylates Generic classification to group MMA, EMA and other methacrylates. Used in chemical industry, production of acrylics sheets, coatings etc. We produce methyl methacrylate (MMA) and ethyl methacrylate (EMA).
Methanol Methyl alcohol. Used in chemical industry, fuel for vehicles, production of synthesis gas, etc. We use methanol as a raw material to produce methyl methacrylate (MMA).
MMA Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is an organic compound and liquid monomer. Used mainly in production of acrylic sheets, molding compounds, surface coatings, impact modifiers etc. We produce MMA through the acetone cyanohydrin (ACH) process, using methanol as a raw material.
Natural gas Naturally occurred hydrocarbon gas mixture consisting primarily of methane. Used in chemical industry, fuel for vehicles,  power generation etc. We use natural gas as raw material to produce HCN and as fuel for the production of steam.
PMMA Polymethyl methacrylate is a thermoplastic resin of polymerized methyl methacrylate. Used mainly in the manufacture of auto parts, and paints and coatings. It is a shatter-resistant alternative to glass, with superior weathering properties. We produce PMMA by the MMA polymerization process.
Polystyrene Aromatic polymer, produced by polymerizing styrene. Used in packaging, consumer products, electronics/appliances, construction. We produce polystyrene by polymerizing styrene.
Propylene Unsaturated organic compound, typically results from the cracking of naphtha or from the refining of oil and gas. Mainly used to produce polypropylene, it is also a raw material to produce other chemicals, such as acrylonitrile. We use propylene to produce acrylonitrile.
SAN SAN is a resin of styrene and acrylonitrile. Uses include food containers, water bottles, kitchenware, computer products, packaging material, battery cases and plastic optical fibers. We produce and sell SAN  resin.
Sodium cyanide Sodium cyanide is an inorganic compound. Used mainly to extract gold and other precious metals in mining industry. We produce and sell sodium cyanide.
Styrene Styrene is an organic compound mainly produced by dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene. Used to produce polystyrene, expandable polystyrene (EPS), ABS/SAN resins, SBR and latices. We produce and sell styrene, and we also use styrene as a raw material to produce polystyrene and latices.
Styrenics Generic classification for several chemical products with the monomer styrene in their composition. Used for several applications within different industries. We use this term to refer to one of the main categories of products we sell, which includes products such as styrene, polystyrene and latex, among others.
Sulfuric acid Sulfuric acid is a mineral acid. Principal uses include fertilizer manufacturing, oil refining, wastewater processing and chemical synthesis. We use sulfuric acid to produce MMA, ammonium sulfate and acrylonitrile.
